Mike McCarthy is expected to receive interest from NFL teams for head coaching vacancies this offseason, and he reportedly has an interview lined up with one of his former foes.
McCarthy will interview with the New York Giants for their head coach job, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday.
The Giants are searching for a new head coach after they fired Brian Daboll in November. Daboll went 20-40-1 in three-plus seasons with the Giants. He took the team to the playoffs in his first year in 2022 but went just 11-33 after that. The Giants went 4-13 this season, but they finished the year on a high note with a 34-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 17 and a 34-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18.
McCarthy is one of the most experienced candidates in the 2026 head coach pool. The 62-year-old has been a head coach in the NFL for 18 total seasons, first with the Green Bay Packers from 2006-18 and more recently with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-24. McCarthy is plenty familiar with the Giants from the time he has spent coaching in the NFC.
In total, McCarthy has a regular-season record of 174-112-2. He is 11-11 in the playoffs and won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers in 2010. McCarthy has also worked with an impressive list of quarterbacks that includes Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Rich Gannon and Joe Montana.
The Giants are likely to hire a head coach who can help develop Jaxson Dart as the former Ole Miss star heads into his second NFL season. McCarthy is known for being a great offensive mind, so it makes sense that New York has interest in him.
While McCarthy is receiving consideration for the Giants head coach job, the team might have a different candidate at the top of its list.
The Baltimore Ravens stunned the NFL when they fired John Harbaugh on Tuesday. Harbaugh was one of the longest-tenured head coaches in the league and had been with the Ravens since 2008. There were seven teams with head coach vacancies as of Tuesday, and Harbaugh is expected to be the most sought-after candidate.
There has already been talk that Harbaugh is New York's top choice, so McCarthy may have to get in line if he wants the job.
