Despite the overwhelming evidence of the offense's regression under Kevin Patullo, Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has been nothing but supportive of his offensive coordinator.
Now, with a win-or-go-home matchup with the San Francisco 49ers on the horizon, there will be no margin for error.
Moreover, even Sirianni doesn't sound too convinced about his team's chance of dictating the terms of the game on Sunday.
“We know a lot of the things that we are good at and that we want to continue to try to press, but they're watching tape too, and they're going to have answers for that,” Sirianni said, per John Clark of NBC Sports. “And so yeah, there are things that you can call and run, and there's some things that part of your identity that you call on your terms, and you have both of those things as you comb through.”
Sirianni claimed that the Eagles had finally found their offensive identity.
“I do, I do. I think we are continuing to get better through that, and I think that it's shown in some of these last games, and obviously Buffalo, we had a bad half where we didn't do a good enough job at coaching,” Sirianni said. “We didn't do a good enough job playing. But yeah, I think we have.”
Eagles fans will hope the team learned from the Buffalo game Sirianni mentioned. The Eagles had one first down and went 0-for-7 on third down in the second half of that game, logging just 3.5 yards per drive and 1.8 yards per rush while not completing a single pass.
That's not going to get the job done against Robert Saleh's defense, yet it seems like they're either unwilling or unable to make adjustments or go back to what worked for them last year.
Nick Sirianni will live and die by his convictions. He's led the Eagles to two Super Bowls with that mindset, and he's not going to change now.
