Alex Bregman may have miscalculated his leverage and free-agency value.
The two-time World Series champion has yet to sign a new deal after opting out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, and money might be running out around MLB. That's why, contrary to initial reports, there may not be many teams willing or able to make him a substantial offer.
According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, only the Arizona Diamondbacks pose a legitimate threat to lure him away from Fenway Park right now.
"The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks have been perceived within the industry as the two biggest threats to a Red Sox reunion, though Toronto’s recent signing of Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto likely takes the Jays out of the mix," Feinsand wrote.
With no major updates about a Ketel Marte trade, either, the insider believes that it's just a matter of time before Bregman puts pen to paper to return to Boston.
"That leaves Arizona as a major player in the Bregman sweepstakes, though that could change if the Diamondbacks take Ketel Marte off the trade market," Feinsand added. "While a number of teams continue to monitor Bregman’s market, multiple Major League executives believe the three-time All-Star will ultimately return to Boston."
The Red Sox have made some marginal moves to try to keep up with the Blue Jays at the top of the AL East. And while Bregman isn't the superstar he used to be, his timely hitting and veteran leadership might be crucial to this team's success in 2026.
