The Golden State Warriors don't look like a championship contender right now, and even coach Steve Kerr admitted that they didn't have enough firepower to keep up with the top teams in the West.
The team has unsuccessfully tried to improve the roster to make one final championship run with Stephen Curry at the helm.
Now, with the Feb. 5 trade deadline on the horizon, they might have no choice but to roll the dice and make their biggest move yet.
According to a report by Sam Amick and Christian Clark of The Athletic, there's a realistic chance they can trade for Anthony Davis. However, it will cost them one of their veteran stars.
“The Golden State Warriors (19-18; eighth in the West) have also discussed a Davis deal with the Mavericks, with team sources indicating that the door was not completely closed,” Clark and Amick wrote. “Yet with the Warriors known to be staunchly against the notion of trading either Draymond Green ($25.8 million this season) or Jimmy Butler ($54.1 million), there is no realistic pathway to finding a deal that works financially.”
Davis has struggled to stay on the floor for most of his career, so that's definitely a risky gamble.
That being said, the Warriors owe it to Steph Curry. Even if they're reluctant to give up valuable draft picks because they know they won't be a good team in the post-Curry years, they need to compete while he's still there.
They've already broken up their historic trio with the Klay Thompson trade.
Draymond Green has given them more trouble than production this season, and swapping him for Davis would be a massive upgrade at this point in their careers.
As for Jimmy Butler, he was the last one to get there, so he might be the odd man out. Whatever the case, this team can't afford to rest on its laurels anymore.
