LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin continues to fail to attract big-name quarterbacks in the transfer portal.
After former Cincinnati Bearcats QB Brendan Sorsby picked the Texas Tech Red Raiders over LSU, the Tigers have also lost out on ex-Florida Gators QB DJ Lagway. On3's Hayes Fawcett broke the news that Lagway plans to play for the Baylor Bears next season. His father, former Baylor running back Derek, changed his Instagram profile picture to a photo of him and his son in Bears gear, confirming the report.
In December 2025, Matt Moscona of LouisianaSports.net reported LSU contacted the QB's representatives. Before that, Kiffin retweeted a post on X announcing his entry into the transfer portal. Now that LSU's attempt to lure him to Baton Rouge has failed, the school may become more desperate.
LSU is losing senior QB Garrett Nussmeier (who threw 41 TD passes in two seasons as the Tigers starter) to the NFL. Its roster lacks a viable replacement. Backup QB Michael Van Buren Jr. has announced he plans to transfer to the South Florida Bulls.

DJ Lagway, a five-star recruit in the class of 2024, struggled to meet expectations in two seasons at Florida. In 24 games, he completed a below-average 62 percent of his passes for 4,179 yards, 28 TD passes and 23 interceptions.
There were flashes of promise, though. In his freshman year, he went 6-1 as a starter, posting a solid 154.9 passer rating. Kiffin, an offensive-minded coach, could unlock his untapped potential.
In three seasons under Kiffin, former Ole Miss Rebels QB Jaxson Dart (now with the New York Giants) developed into a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. 2025 pick No. 25 Dart set the school record for passing yards (10,617) during his time in Oxford.
LSU still has plenty of time to land a QB, perhaps Demond Williams Jr. The Tigers are reportedly the front-runner for the QB if he finds a way to let the Washington Huskies release him from his NIL (name, image and likeness) contract.
Kiffin better find his QB soon. He doesn't want to roll with QB Emile Picarella III, who has yet to throw a pass in his college career, as his Week 1 starter in 2026.
