Unranked West Virginia upsets No. 22 Kansas, earns resume-building win

The West Virginia Mountaineers earned by far their best victory of the 2025-26 season on Saturday.

The Mountaineers took down the No. 22 Kansas Jayhawks, 86-75, in Morgantown, earning a victory that will glisten on their resume two months from now.

West Virginia didn't let the Jayhawks get out of their sight all afternoon. KU's halftime lead was only four, and while Bill Self's squad led by eight in the second half, WVU didn't quit.

What resulted was a — run to the end of the game that saw West Virginia take a 60-59 lead with 11:06 to play and expand that lead to 77-67 with 2:21 to go.

A Mountaineers squad that looked thoroughly overmatched in their 80-59 loss to No. 3 Iowa State on Jan. 2 clearly flipped a switch on Saturday afternoon.

Darryn Peterson led Kansas with 23 points, while Honor Huff also scored 23 to lead West Virginia.

Gut-check time for Kansas

The Jayhawks have not looked like the perennial power they usually are.

Kansas lost its Big 12 opener to UCF and needed overtime to squeak past TCU. The Jayhawks have to host No. 3 Iowa State on Jan. 13 in a game that could get ugly if Self's team plays the way it did on Saturday.
