Cubs make splash signing, bring in Alex Bregman on five-year contract

After numerous offseasons of fans clamoring for their front office to spend money, the Chicago Cubs have made a blockbuster move.

Cubs get their superstar third baseman

According to several reports, Chicago and star third baseman Alex Bregman are in agreement on a five-year, $175 million contract.

The contract for Bregman includes a no-trade clause and no opt-outs.

Bregman will head to the Cubs after spending last season with the Boston Red Sox. The $175 million contract now becomes the third-largest in franchise history for Chicago.

The addition of Alex Bregman gives Chicago a stacked lineup

Last season, the Cubs lineup was one of the better units in MLB. That lineup just got even better with the addition of a three-time All-Star, as well as a Gold Glove-caliber third baseman to add to an already stellar defense.

Bregman also boasts excellent numbers against a couple of NL Central teams, something that could've played a factor in the Cubs decision to pursue Bregman.

What does the move mean for Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw?

With the free agent addition of Bregman, last season's rookie third baseman Matt Shaw has seemed to have lost his starting spot at third base. Chicago could elect to use Shaw as a super utility player, or they could elect for option No. 2, one that would be unpopular with the fan base.

Shaw could be moved to second base, which would lead to a trade of All-Star second baseman Nico Hoerner. Hoerner, one of the more underrated players in the league, has been involved in trade rumors each of the last two offseasons, and that may now come to fruition with the addition of Bregman.

Chicago's overall roster is better than last season

Chicago has had an excellent offseason, giving itself a better roster than last season's 93-win team. Back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since 2015-2018 seem to be well on the horizon for the Cubs in 2026.
