Are the 49ers the most dangerous team in the playoffs?

The San Francisco 49ers got a grimy 23-19 win in Philadelphia against the Eagles on Wild Card Weekend. They have a date with the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle during the Divisional Round for a chance to go to the NFC Championship Game.

A lot of questions were answered during their wild-card matchup surrounding their defense and the ability to come back in the fourth quarter to win, but one question that looms large is: Are the 49ers the most dangerous team left in the playoffs?

The most dangerous team is not always the best team by record, stats or number of accolades. It’s the team that no one wants to face. There are eight teams left in the NFL playoffs and every team has its strengths and weaknesses, but not every team has the same expectations.

Outside the greater Bay Area, not many people expected them to win in Philadelphia, and that will be the case this week in Seattle.

No great expectations

They are the largest underdog in the Divisional Round, 7.5 points, against the number one seed in the NFC.

They are playing without any expectations compared to other teams in the playoffs and that makes them dangerous.

They are embracing all the adversity they have been through this season, losing multiple star players and leaders like Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and now George Kittle. Although expectations have changed for the 49ers due to the challenges they have faced this year, playing through adversity can be a positive aspect for a team.

Rest versus rust

One advantage of getting the number one seed in the NFL is having a week off during Wild Card Weekend. The week off gives teams much-needed rest, but sometimes rest comes with rust.

A week of rest might not be as great an advantage as people believe. Teams that had the week of rest could start slow and struggle during their first playoff game due to being idle for a week while the other played the week before.

The 49ers are playing loose and confident, and Hall of Fame Quarterback Steve Young is excited for possibilities the organization will have now and in the future.

There is no doubt they will have the least amount of pressure because not many outside of their locker room believe they can make a Super Bowl run.

They have an “us against the world” mentality and despite all the injuries they have faced this season, their underdog mindset could be the exact elixir their team needs to win games in the postseason.

Out of the eight remaining teams left in the playoffs, the 49ers have the fewest expectations to win the Super Bowl. They will be the road team in every playoff game the play until the Super Bowl, should they make it that far. The injuries and the difficult path have oddsmakers giving the 49ers the longest odds (+2200) to make the Super Bowl, per FanDuel, well behind the team with the second-longest odds (Chicago Bears, +1200).

With the least amount of pressure and expectations heading into the divisional round of the playoffs, they can play free and loose. Sometimes teams like those are the most dangerous.
