It seems that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts could become the subject of some interesting stories for the second offseason in three years.
For a lengthy piece published on Friday, NFL insider Michael Silver of The Athletic touched upon all that went wrong with the Eagles offense from Week 1 of the 2025 season through Philadelphia's wild-card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Silver also shared an interesting piece of information regarding how Hurts is allegedly viewed by some within the team's locker room.
According to Silver, there is "a sense inside the locker room that the Eagles’ powerbrokers (head coach Nick Sirianni, general manager Howie Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie) are reluctant to criticize Hurts."
"For all that the quarterback has accomplished," Silver continued, "including two standout performances on the sport’s biggest stage (one of which earned him Super Bowl MVP honors), he has been the source of much internal frustration, including from teammates other than (wide receiver A.J. Brown)."
Hurts signed a five-year contract extension reportedly worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed in the spring of 2023. The following season, the Eagles endured a brutal collapse that left some wondering if the club could attempt to escape Hurts' deal after just a single campaign.
Multiple reports then surfaced in the summer of 2024 claiming that the relationship between Sirianni and Hurts had become at least somewhat "fractured." In December of that year, Brown seemed to criticize Hurts after the signal-caller passed for just 108 yards in a game.
Those relationships seemingly were on good terms roughly 12 months ago as the Eagles were completing a trip that would end with a Super Bowl LIX victory. Nevertheless, it appears some of Hurts' teammates may not be all that fond of his personality.
"Hurts, who has an endorsement deal with Michael Jordan’s brand within the Nike subdivision, fashions himself as the NFL’s 'MJ' — witness his hallway pose with a cigar and the Lombardi Trophy last February — and some in the organization take that personally," Silver noted.
Philadelphia will soon hire a new offensive coordinator who may or may not be given full control of the offense. Additionally, Roseman may already be shopping the previously mentioned Brown to other teams.
The Eagles are expected to keep both Hurts and Sirianni through the offseason, but it sounds like some within the organization believe the club's long-term QB1 isn't on the roster this winter.
"Some NFL sources familiar with the Eagles' organizational mindset believe they might draft a quarterback this spring," Silver added. "Backup Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round selection, is also highly regarded within the building."
Perhaps a QB-needy team such as the New York Jets should give the Eagles a call about Hurts' status before the 2026 draft gets underway, just in case Philadelphia could be open to a break-glass-in-case-of-an-emergency trade.
