The Philadelphia Eagles are searching for a new offensive coordinator after they confirmed earlier in the week that Kevin Patullo would no longer hold that position.
While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni shared that he wants the club "to evolve as an offense" while working under Patullo's to-be-hired replacement.
"I'm looking to bring in the guy that's going to best help us do that," Sirianni explained, per Eric Edholm of the NFL's website. "I think there are many different ways to be successful on offense. Everybody has different styles, everybody has different players, and there's many different ways to be successful."
Patullo became public enemy No. 1 in the eyes of many Eagles fans as the Philadelphia offense struggled with inconsistent performances throughout the season. The Eagles then scored via only a pair of field goals in the second half of their 23-19 wild-card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 11.
During Thursday's news conference, Sirianni was asked why he didn't dismiss Patullo this past fall when it was clear that the Philadelphia offense wasn't clicking as hoped.
"We did some different things as we continued to go through," Sirianni said, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Like I told you guys, I did more, got involved more. At the end of the day, I did what I thought was best for the football team. We didn’t reach our goals, so obviously, it didn’t work out."
Sirianni revealed that he plans to speak with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, general manager Howie Roseman and veteran players regarding their opinions of candidates for the coordinator gig. That said, a previous report mentioned that the Eagles may make "a little bit of a clean break" from Sirianni's preferred offensive strategies.
Per Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, Sirianni wouldn't say on Thursday if the new coordinator will receive full control of the team's offense.
"That’s way early," Sirianni noted. "Those decisions don’t have to be made for a long time."
It remains unclear if Sirianni or somebody else (Roseman) will ultimately make that decision either before or after the Eagles hire their new OC.
