The Orlando Magic were locked in a tight battle with the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday — until Anthony Black lowered the boom with a powerful dunk over four defenders.
After Black's jam broke a 107-107 tie, Orlando never trailed the rest of the way in their 118-111 victory. Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 26 points, but Black's recent scoring bursts have helped transform the team's previously inept offense into a respectable one.
It's appropriate that Black's big play Thursday would be a drive to the hoop, because it's a big part of his offensive improvement this season. Black, who turns 22 on Jan. 20, is taking 4.4 attempts at the rim per game, up from 2.7 in 2024-25. Last year, he made 57.5 percent of those attempts, and this year it's up to 67.8 percent.
He's also turning those trips to the hoop into foul shots, getting 3.9 free throws per game and drawing 77 shooting fouls, after drawing 92 all of last season. He's drawn 87 fouls overall while committing only 66.
Plus, he's dunking a lot — 44 times in 41 games.

One sign of Black's added strength in his third NBA season is that he has 23 and-ones — plays where he's fouled but still makes his shot. Last year, he had 25 for the whole season.
Black's game is quite physical. When Orlando took him with the No. 5 pick in 2023, he was already a plus defender, with excellent size for his position at 6-foot-7. It took a little longer for Black's offense to catch up, lacking consistency with his jump shot and his passing.
Now that he's in his third season of NBA weight training, Black is more able to punish defenders on drives. His team trusts him with the ball more, as seen in his career-high four assists per game. Black is choosing high-efficiency shots as well, taking 73 percent of his shots either at the rim or behind the three-point line. When he elevates to the basket, he's tough to stop, even with a lot of help.

Banchero and Franz Wagner are still the Magic's primary scorers, along with Desmond Bane. Now that they're getting production from Black, the Magic won't have to choose between offense and defense — their third-year guard can give them both.
