Mets still eyeing upgrades after signing Bo Bichette

The New York Mets surprised the baseball world when they agreed to terms with infielder Bo Bichette, stealing him from the Phillies at the last moment. The Mets are reportedly planning to use Bichette at third, filling one of several holes on their roster.

Adding Bichette does not mean that the Mets are done improving the roster. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are still looking to improve their starting rotation and outfield, with a focus on an outfielder who can handle center field and slot in at the corners if needed.

Sammon further noted that the Mets remain interested in outfielder Cody Bellinger, who would be a perfect fit for what the Mets are looking for. Bellinger is capable of handling all three outfield spots and first base and would protect outfielder Juan Soto in the lineup. The problem is that the Mets are interested in Bellinger, but only if he would accept a short-term deal, something the outfielder does not appear to be interested in. Otherwise, the Mets may be forced to look at options such as Harrison Bader.

New York Mets still have time to upgrade roster

The Mets have more options on the pitching side. The likes of Framber Valdez, Zac Gallen and Lucas Giolito remain on the market, with the Mets having been linked to Valdez during the offseason. Valdez is the type of pitcher that the Mets need — a top-of-the-rotation workhorse with a track record of being able to take the ball every fifth day.

Likewise, the Mets may have more options to upgrade the rotation on the trade front. Sammon listed the likes of Kris Bubic and MacKenzie Gore as possibilities, although he noted that either pitcher is a long shot to be acquired. Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta is another possible option and would also be the type of top-of-the-rotation starter the Mets need.

The New York Mets have plenty of work to do if they are going to contend in the NL East. Their offseason may not be over, although spring training is rapidly approaching.
