Mets continue impressive week with trade for top-of-the-rotation starter Freddy Peralta

The New York Mets came into the offseason looking for a top-of-the-rotation starter. That was accomplished on Wednesday night.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Mets have acquired pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Brewers. Pitching prospect Brandon Sproat and minor league infielder/center fielder Jett Williams are heading to Milwaukee. Joel Sherman of the New York Post added that pitcher Tobias Myers will be heading to New York as well.

Peralta has established himself as a modern-day workhorse, making at least 30 starts in each of the last three seasons, while his 516 innings since the start of 2013 are the 15th most in the majors. He posted an excellent 2.70 ERA and a 1.075 WHIP over his 176.2 innings in 2025, striking out 204 batters with 66 walks.

The 27-year-old Myers spent time in the rotation and bullpen in 2025 after starting 25 of his 27 appearances as a rookie the previous year. He posted a 3.55 ERA and a 1.362 WHIP over his 50.2 innings, striking out 38 batters with 15 walks. Myers started six of his 22 appearances in 2025, giving the Mets a solid back-of-the-rotation starter or a long relief option in the bullpen.

The Mets paid a steep price. Sproat, the Mets' fifth-best prospect per MLB.com, is considered to have a plus changeup, while his mid-90s fastball and slider flash plus potential. His arsenal is rounded out by an upper 70s curve that gives hitters a different look. A consensus top-100 prospect ahead of the 2025 season, he posted a 4.24 ERA and a 1.240 WHIP over 121 innings in Triple-A, striking out 113 batters with 53 walks. Sproat made his major league debut in September, allowing 11 runs on 18 hits and seven walks over 20.2 innings, while striking out 17 batters.

Jett, the Mets' third-best prospect, is regarded as a solid all-around player with plus speed. At 5-foot-7, he has a smaller strike zone and draws plenty of walks, but he can also generate surprising power for his size. A consensus top-100 prospect in 2024 and 2025, Williams rebounded from an injury-plagued 2024 season to post a .261/.363/.465 batting line in 572 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 17 homers and 34 doubles while stealing 34 bases. Williams has spent time at second, short and center, potentially giving the Brewers multiple options for what could be a dynamic top-of-the-batting-order player.

The Mets have had an impressive past few days, adding infielder Bo Bichette in free agency while filling their void in center by acquiring Luis Robert Jr. Adding Peralta and Myers continues what has become a strong offseason as the Mets look to return to the playoffs.
