Why Stafford is worthy of Hall of Fame with or without a second ring

Why Rams QB Matthew Stafford is worthy of Hall of Fame with or without a second ring

In front of an opportunity to reach another Super Bowl, Matthew Stafford's career has become a focus of debate around NFL circles. For some, Stafford's legacy and Hall of Fame candidacy is on the line when he leads the Los Angeles Rams into Seattle to take on the Seahawks on Sunday night.

Will capturing another NFC title solidify Stafford as worthy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame? No. Because he already deserves the honor no matter what happens throughout the rest of his career.

Stafford, the favorite to be named the 2025 NFL MVP, which would be the first such award of his career, has enough on his resume to warrant induction, though that's not a statement everyone agrees with.

Bomani Jones dropped a hot take about Matthew Stafford's career

A hot take from longtime sports journalist Bomani Jones, formerly of ESPN, lit fire to the debate about Stafford.

"Imma just say this right now, (if) the Rams don't win the Super Bowl, shut this Hall of Fame thing up," said Jones during an episode of his "The Right Time" podcast. "He's the new Josh Allen. Josh Allen had the 'I mean,' right? He was dealing with that. Now, it's the least scrutinized No. 1 overall pick in the history of No. 1 overall pick quarterbacks."

And while Jones' opinion does come with credibility, he's wrong on this one.

Another ring would be nice, but it is far from necessary based on what Stafford has already accomplished. Most acknowledge Allen, who has yet to lead his team to a Super Bowl as a future Hall of Famer, too.

Dan Orlovsky has no time for those disrespecting Matthew Stafford's legacy

The only part of what Jones said that ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky agrees with is that a second ring would elevate Stafford to another level among the all-time greats.

"I think he's a Hall of Famer. But, if he wins this game and then wins the Super Bowl, I think he gets into the conversation for one of the top 10-15 quarterbacks of all time," Orlovsky said on Thursday's "Get Up" show.

Orlovsky is right on the money.

Matthew Stafford is destined for the Hall of Fame with or without a second ring

To this point in Stafford's 17-year NFL career, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft has thrown for 64,516 passing yards, the sixth most in league history, has completed 63.5% of his passes and has 423 touchdown passes to 196 interceptions.

Those statistics alone offer a strong case, but he also already has a ring after leading the Rams to a win in Super Bowl LVI.

Stafford is coming off his best regular season to date. He led the NFL with 4,707 yards — his 10th season with over 4,000 yards — while tallying a league-best 46 touchdowns and only eight picks.

Losing with the Detroit Lions wasn't Matthew Stafford's fault

Detractors argue that, despite his statistics, Stafford endured a 74-90-1 record without a playoff win during his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions and he has only been named a Pro Bowler three times and a First-Team All-Pro once (2025).

However, football is a team game, and the Lions didn't offer Stafford a roster that could ever contend. Once he enjoyed a championship-caliber team around him, he got the job done.

But Stafford doesn't need another playoff win — he's 7-2 in the postseason with Los Angeles — to earn the Hall of Fame. When comparing Stafford's resume with some of the quarterbacks already enshrined, it's clear Stafford belongs.

That said, capping off the year with a second trip to the Super Bowl and his first league MVP award would shut his doubters up once and for all.
