The Dallas Stars are looking like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender even despite a recent cold stretch.

At 30-14-9, they’re just a point back of Minnesota for second place in the top-heavy Central Division. If there’s one area of the roster the Stars could improve at the trade deadline, it’s their forward depth.

Dallas only has four forwards with more than 20 points on the season, and general manager Jim Nill has always been willing to add at the trade deadline, just as he did last year when he landed Mikko Rantanen in a massive deal.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by NHL insider David Pagnotta, who shared that the Stars are targeting Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman of the Calgary Flames to address their issues up front.

Carter Hutton: “A couple other teams that I wanted to touch on in the Central Division that we’ve heard a little bit of rumors around being active would be like Dallas and Winnipeg. Where do they go? I know there’s been ties to maybe [Nazem] Kadri and [Logan] Stanley being moved out of those pieces.”

David Pagnotta: “Yeah, well, Dallas, Dallas wants to add. There’s no question. They want to push for the Stanley Cup. That’s their goal. And with all the talk of Blake Coleman, there’s been some chatter of Kadri leading up to this point, but it was really Coleman focused and then Rasmus Andersson before he was dealt to Vegas. It sounds like the chatter is picking up on Kadri, and I’m glad you mentioned him because it does sound like Dallas has an appetite to bring him in, and I think Calgary is willing to retain on that deal. I don’t think it’s a necessity, not for Dallas anyway, but I think there is an appetite for Calgary to retain on it if the deal is sweet enough for them to jump on. We’ll see where that goes. But in the last, I’d say since the beginning of the weekend or in and around the weekend, it sounded like Dallas and Kadri talks have started to simmer a little bit more. And I’m sure there are going to be other teams that would love to get their hands on this guy, but it definitely sounds like Dallas wants to go after something big here. Kadri would fit the bill for them and their familiarity with at least Mikko Rantanen and when they won together in Colorado.”
