Earlier in January, Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner and former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long voiced concerns regarding whether or not current Philadelphia starting signal-caller Jalen Hurts has the goods to win a second Super Bowl championship with the franchise.
Current NFL analyst Marc Ross has experience evaluating players for organizations and served as the Eagles college scouting director during a stint with the club that ran from 1996 to 2004. For a piece produced by Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com that was published on Wednesday, Ross somewhat echoed the takes previously offered by Warner and Long.
"I don’t see Jalen any different than I’ve always seen him, back to when I scouted him," Ross explained. "There was a reason why he lost the job at Alabama. There was a reason why he was a second-round pick. There are reasons why he has had success. But his flaws aren’t going to change. ...He’s just not capable of doing (certain things). He’s not a high-volume thrower, sit back in the pocket, scan the field real fast, find second, third reads and go for it."
Former Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo was often blamed by fans and local media members for the club's offensive struggles this season before he was relieved of his duties. According to ESPN stats, Philadelphia finished the regular season ranked 24th in the league with an average of 311.2 offensive yards gained per game and 19th with an average of 22.3 points scored per contest.
Meanwhile, Pro Football Reference stats show that Hurts was 24th in the NFL among qualified players with an average of 201.5 passing yards per game and 22nd with a 55.3 adjusted QBR.
"He is best at deliberate play-action, run the ball, get it out to my first read," Ross added about Hurts. "That’s what he always will be. He’s just not a quick read, quick process, bam, bam, bam. .. (The run game) fell off drastically this year, which impacts everything else about the offense, particularly Jalen and his skill set of what he needs."
A recent report mentioned that Hurts "has been the source of much internal frustration, including from teammates other than (wide receiver A.J. Brown)." Questions about Hurts' relationships with head coach Nick Sirianni and with Brown have hovered over the Eagles for years. Many believe the Eagles will trade Brown once the new league year opens in March.
"Another aspect is Jalen and some of the personalities," Ross said about the Eagles' inability to hire one of their top offensive coordinator candidates in January. "A.J.’s personality of people saying, 'Okay, do I want to work with that? How much can I deal with that?' And then Jalen being a strong personality."
On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter hinted that the Eagles could soon be impacted by a major change. Such a comment may lead some to believe that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could be taking calls regarding Hurts' availability.
