New York Jets seemingly made a panic hire at DC with Brian Duker

The New York Jets were looking for a new defensive coordinator, and it appeared that head coach Aaron Glenn was turning over just about every rock he could find.

Eight candidates were originally interviewed for the job. That includes Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, Jim Leonhard, Chris Harris, Daronte Jones, Ephraim Banda, DeMarcus Covington and Mathieu Araujo.

Brian Duker, an assistant for the Miami Dolphins, wasn't originally interviewed, but he got a virtual interview on Tuesday and by that time, half of the coaches named above were already off the market.

That interview apparently went well, because Duker is now the new defensive coordinator in New York.

The Jets announced the hire on Wednesday.

New defensive coordinator Brian Duker will not call plays for New York Jets

Interestingly, Duker will not be calling plays because he has no experience calling plays. That job will fall to Glenn, who was hands-off on defense this past season but got the head-coaching role with the Jets because of the job he did as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

Rich Cimini of ESPN is reporting that Glenn made this hire because of the familiarity he has with Duker. They coached together for three seasons in Detroit, with Duker working his way up from defensive assistant to safeties and defensive backs coach.

He's been the passing game coordinator and secondary coach for the Dolphins for the past two seasons under Mike McDaniel.

"During our time in Detroit, Brian consistently demonstrated a high-football acumen and an aggressive approach to defense," Glenn said in a statement. "I'm confident that his energy and knowledge of the game will help elevate our players and push this team forward."

This very well may be a good hire for the Jets, but it does seem a bit desperate to hire a candidate one day after a virtual interview — especially if he's not even going to be calling plays.

This is the Jets we're talking about, though. Last season, they became the first team in NFL history to go an entire season without intercepting a pass. Glenn was a three-time Pro Bowler as a defensive back.

Sometimes these things don't make sense in the NFL, and that's usually the case in New York.
