The top-ranked UConn Huskies rode the hot hand of an unlikely hero in Wednesday night's 97-39 rout over Xavier.
While UConn's leading scorer for the season, sophomore forward Sarah Strong, had 25 points (10-of-14 FG), that was not enough to outshine teammate Allie Ziebell, who went off for a career-high 34 points (11-of-15 FG, 10-of-14 3PT) in 29 minutes off the bench, tying the program record for made threes in a game.
UConn (22-0, 12-0 Big East) shot 36-of-69 (52%) overall and 15-of-34 (44%) from long range on an extremely efficient night from the floor, but it was not from the usual scorers as the sophomore hit her stride against the Musketeers.
Ziebell tied the UConn three-pointer record with this triple to extend the lead to 53 with under seven minutes remaining.

Prior to her performance, only Katie Lou Samuelson, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Maya Moore had made 10 threes in a game for the Huskies, putting her on an exclusive list of UConn players.
Not only did UConn's second-leading scorer, Azzi Fudd, struggle (six points, 2-of-12 FG), but the Huskies only had nine healthy options as six players were out of action.
Xavier (10-11, 3-9 Big East) is only ahead of DePaul in the conference standings, so it is not like Ziebell's performance was necessary for the Huskies to win a game they were already expected to win, but it did not hurt on a night the shots were not falling as easily for most of the roster.
Coming into Wednesday, Ziebell was eighth on the team in scoring (6.2 PPG), while her previous career-high was 17 points during her rookie season. She is also averaging 16.6 minutes per game, so the fact that she nearly doubled that and led UConn in scoring shows how clutch she was and why she became the focal point of the offense for much of the night.
A stiffer test awaits on Sunday when UConn pauses Big East play to face No. 15 Tennessee (14-3, 6-0 SEC). The Lady Vols have won seven straight and should pose a challenge to a Huskies team that has not been tested in a while.
UConn has won 21 of its 22 games by double-digits and each of its conference games by at least 36 points, so how it performs in a closer game is still relatively unknown. However, Ziebell's career night shows how deep this roster is and why UConn is set up for another title bid under head coach Geno Auriemma.
