Tigers signing Framber Valdez slams door on Tarik Skubal extension

The chances of the Detroit Tigers and pitcher Tarik Skubal working out a long-term extension may officially be over.

The two sides clearly have differing opinions regarding Skubal's value. That was obvious during their arbitration hearing as Skubal's representatives filed for a $32 million salary, and the Tigers countered with $19 million. A decision is expected on Thursday.

The disagreement in Skubal's value extends to any long-term deal. Jon Heyman of the New York PostĀ reported a $250 million gap between Skubal and the Tigers on an extension. The only sliver of hope for an agreement was agent Scott Boras saying that he does not have a deadline for talks on a new contract.

Detroit Tigers prepare for end of Tarik Skubal era

Those hopes may have officially ended on Wednesday. The Tigers reportedly agreed to terms on a three-year, $115 million contract with pitcher Framber Valdez. Pairing Valdez and Skubal gives the Tigers what may be the best 1-2 punch atop a rotation in the majors.

That price tag may come with another cost. The Tigers have balked at Skubal's asking price but are apparently willing to pay Valdez a significant salary. Valdez has been a durable top-of-the-rotation starter since transitioning to the rotation on a full-time basis in 2020, but he is not at the same level as Skubal.

In signing Valdez, the Tigers will have a dominant duo atop their rotation. However, that signing may signal the beginning of the end for Skubal's time in Detroit.
