Mike McCarthy already making unprecedented change to Steelers organization after Mike Tomlin era

It is a new era of football for the Pittsburgh Steelers in more ways than one. The obvious way is that after 19 years, it will no longer be Mike Tomlin patrolling the team's sidelines and running the show. That responsibility now falls on Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy as he looks to continue the franchise's legacy of championship and Hall of Fame coaches.

McCarthy is already making one big change to the Steelers in comparison to the way Tomlin ran things.

Steelers to have their biggest coaching staff ever

According to longtime Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly, McCarthy's staff already has 19 assistant coaches on it and still needs to add at least a tight ends coach. When that tight ends coach gets added, it will bring the coaching staff to 20 assists.

That will make it the biggest coaching staff the Steelers organization has ever employed.

That is especially noteworthy because Tomlin's staff in recent years was consistently one of the smallest in the NFL, and a lot of times by a significant margin.

In an era where teams were hiring as many coaches as possible to bring in as much detail, instruction and preparation, Tomlin continued to remain old-school and keep his coaching staff small. He preferred fewer voices to allow for more direct communication and coaching.

If there was one big criticism of Tomlin's tenure with the Steelers, aside from the lack of playoff success in the second half of it, it was the absence of any sort of a coaching tree to branch out from him. The Steelers never spent big on assistants, rarely had big-name assistants and almost never had fast-rising young coaches that went on to bigger jobs around the league.

It was an old-school but dated approach.

McCarthy obviously is not sticking with that and is bringing in significantly more voices for his staff in a pretty big modernization of how assemble their staff. Whether it produces more and better results will be the big test for McCarthy and his new staff with the Steelers.
