It's been nearly six full years since Tom Brady announced he was leaving the New England Patriots.
Even so, after 20 years and six Super Bowl rings, he'll always be tied to the organization, like it or not. That's why it was somewhat surprising to hear him say that he wasn't necessarily rooting for the Pats in Super Bowl LX.
"I don't have a dog in the fight in this one," Brady said on his "Let's Go!" podcast. "May the best team win, and in terms of the Patriots, this is a new chapter in New England, and I'm glad everyone's embraced the Mike Vrabel regime. There was a little bit of a hiatus in there, but the Patriots are back and it's a very exciting time for everyone in New England."
Granted, he may have tried to be politically correct and objective, given that he's now an analyst and a minority owner for another team. Even so, those comments rubbed some people the wrong way, including one of his former Patriots teammates.
Former cornerback Asante Samuel didn't care for Brady's comments, and he took to social media to criticize him about them.
"Tom Brady I am highly I mean highly disappointed in you not rooting for your ex teammate, Mike Vrabel who is about to do something special," Samuel wrote on X. "I’m going to fye your [expletive] up one of these mornings. Tag Brady let him know I’m on his [expletive]."
Again, Brady was in a bit of a no-win situation there. He's with the Las Vegas Raiders now, and while he's not going to be in the booth to call this game, he has to save face and stay professional. That said, perhaps he could've worded his statement a little more clearly.
