The NHL has a player discipline problem, and we saw another example of it earlier this week when Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was on the receiving end of a controversial hit against the Florida Panthers.
McAvoy had to be helped off the ice after taking a blatant elbow to the head from Panthers defenseman Sandis Vilmanis on a play that only resulted in a two-minute minor penalty.
There was no supplemental discipline from the NHL.
On Friday night, McAvoy posted a picture of the damage from the hit, as well as a replay of him being elbowed in the face.

McAvoy's face is obviously significantly swollen, and it is pretty obvious that there was direct contact with his head on the replay.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety reviewed the hit but deemed it a hockey play instead of something illegal that warranted a suspension. It continues a disturbing trend from the department where these types of hits are going unpunished. There is a staggering lack of consistency.
It is also starting to get noticed. Not only with McAvoy obviously speaking out here, but also with NHL super-agent Allan Walsh on social media. He responded to McAvoy's post with a vulgar comment toward Department of Player Safety leader George Parros. Walsh does not even represent McAvoy, but has been a longtime critic of how the NHL deals with and handles head injuries and hits to the head.
