Scouting Indiana's Fernando Mendoza ahead of 2026 NFL Draft

Indiana's Fernando Mendoza stands out as the top quarterback and overall prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft class. He is the typical pro-style quarterback who can effectively distribute the ball throughout the offense. The three-year starter and national champion quarterback is poised to be a future franchise quarterback in the NFL.

In 2025, he recorded impressive stats: 273 completions out of 379 attempts (72% completion rate), totaling 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

This scouting report dives into Mendoza's tape, traits, production, and scheme fits.

Strengths

Mendoza brings an elite football IQ, demonstrating quick mental processing pre- and post-snap. He's able to identify blitzes, read coverages, identify vulnerabilities based on the play call and exploit them.

He possesses good arm strength and overall mechanics. He can differentiate velocity and touch to layer over second- and third-level defenders. Mendoza can drive the ball into tight windows against both zone and man coverages. He is skilled at throwing back-shoulder fades and against one-on-one coverages while spreading the field.

Overall, he gets into rhythm quickly and possesses the ability to work throughout the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. He's tough and poised under pressure in all downs and situations.

Weaknesses

Mendoza lacks ideal athleticism, which could be a factor when he needs to escape the pocket against blitz-heavy teams or penetration from within. With the heavy RPO focus, he lacked the consistency of dealing with full-field progressions, but when he did, he was solid.

Summary

Mendoza will bring the Matthew Stafford, Tom Brady and Matt Ryan approach with his ability to stand in the pocket and take hits under pressure. Quick processor and will make the right reads to keep his team ahead of the chains. Mendoza consistently showcases good ball placement to every level of the field.

NFL scheme fits

Realistic option: Las Vegas Raiders

New Raiders HC Klint Kubiak runs a scheme heavily influenced by the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay tree — wide-zone runs, heavy play-action, layered timing routes, etc. Mendoza has publicly praised Kubiak's system and studied it extensively, noting his college offense at Indiana incorporated similar elements. The Raiders have massive cap space, multiple 2026 draft picks and weapons like tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty to build around him.
Trade-up option: Los Angeles Rams

With the return of Stafford for the 2026 season, the Rams will eventually need to think of a succession plan, and why not have Mendoza be mentored by Stafford? McVay excels at scheming around pocket passers with processing and accuracy. Mendoza could step in as a high-floor option in an ideal offense.
Unlikely option: San Francisco 49ers

This is a very unlikely option, but it would be an ideal schematic fit for Mendoza. Mendoza would flourish and give the 49ers a higher ceiling each season compared to current starting quarterback Brock Purdy.
