When the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots play in Super Bowl LX on Sunday, it will be a rematch of their classic Super Bowl XLIX game. The Patriots won that game when Russell Wilson was intercepted in the end zone in the final seconds, capping off one of the classic Super Bowl finishes.
This time around, things might be lined up for the Seahawks to get their revenge and win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
Here are five reasons why they can get it done.
This might be the biggest thing going in Seattle's favor. While the Patriots have a rising superstar quarterback in Drake Maye, the Patriots do not really have a game-breaker in the passing game that compares to Smith-Njigba. That is also not really a knock on the Patriots' skill position players; it is just a testament to how good Smith-Njigba is. Nobody really has a player like him.
Smith-Njigba was the NFL's offensive player of the year, and could have put together a compelling argument for league MVP if wide receivers ever received any respect in that discussion.
The Seahawks are one of the best teams in the NFL when it comes to big-play differential, and Smith-Njigba is a huge part of that. He is hard to contain, and that could give Seattle a massive edge.
While the Seahawks offense has big-play potential, its defense is elite across the board.
They allowed a league-low 17.2 points per game during the regular season and feature one of the league's most dominant pass-rushes. What makes their pass-rush so good, and their defense as a whole so effective, is that they are able to get to the quarterback without having to rely on blitzes. That leaves more people back in coverage and creates more opportunities for takeaways.
That could be a significant problem for a young quarterback in Maye, who does not have a lot of elite pass-catching options and has struggled with turnovers so far in these playoffs.
Speaking of the defense, rookie defensive back Nick Emmanwori seems ready to play on Sunday despite having some questions around his availability this past week. He is a dynamic, swiss-army-knife that can impact the play all over the field. He is one of their best impact players, and it is a different defense with him on the field.
The important thing for the Patriots is that they have simply kept winning. Nobody asks the "how" in the playoffs; they just ask if you managed to do it. And the Patriots have.
There has also been a lot of dancing through the raindrops, given how much their offense has struggled.
They have averaged just 18 points per game in their three playoff games and have not looked anything like the offense that did so well in the regular season.
The big question regarding the Patriots all season was always centered around their strength of schedule and how soft it was. There was intrigue over what they would do against better teams. So far, the offense has not really impressed.
In their defense, they have played some of the best defensive teams in the NFL.
The problem is that they might have their biggest test on Sunday.
Not to bring back bad memories for Seahawks fans, but they would have already had one Super Bowl win over Seattle had Pete Carroll just given the ball to Marshawn Lynch one or two more times at the goal line. Sam Darnold and Mike Macdonald will finish the job.
