Spurs' Stephon Castle makes NBA history in win over Mavericks

In the middle of only his second season in the NBA, San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle has already started establishing a unique legacy for himself.

Castle had the game of his life on Saturday night, making both franchise and league history all at once.

Leading the Spurs to a 138-125 win over their in-state rival Dallas Mavericks, Castle posted a box score that not even the great Tim Duncan was able to produce. Castle scored exactly 40 points while bringing down 12 rebounds and also dishing out 12 assists, giving him the Spurs' first triple-double since David Robinson did it in 1993.

Stephon Castle understands the significance of matching David Robinson

"Just an honor to even be in that conversation with him (Robinson)," said Castle when asked about being the first to register a 40-point triple-double for the Spurs in 33 years.

Castle made NBA history, too

Castle, who now averages 17.1 points, 5.2 boards and 7.0 assists in 42 games so far during the 2025-26 season, also became the youngest player in NBA history to ever put up a line of 40 points, 12 boards and 12 assists in a game.

Putting Castle's historic game in perspective

To put the cherry on top of Castle's miraculous performance, San Antonio's first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft made history in an extremely efficient manner as well. He connected on 15-of-19 shots from the field for a 78.9% shooting clip and was even 3-for-5 from long range.

Castle has steadily shown signs of taking his game to another level this season after a rookie year that saw him finish averaging 14.,7 points per game overall. But despite his mostly solid play as an NBA sophomore, Castle's 40-point night marked only his second game with at least 30 points all season — he scored 30 on Dec. 10 in a win against the Lakers in Los Angeles.

Only time will tell when Castle makes history again, granted it might be inevitable.
