A new story about the deterioration of Jonathan Kuminga’s relationship with the Golden State Warriors revealed just how toxic things became between the two sides.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote a story about the breakdown in the relationship between the two sides, which hit a low point not long before Kuminga was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade. On Dec. 10, during a break in the schedule, the Warriors summoned Kuminga for a meeting with Steve Kerr.
The Warriors wanted to confront Kuminga about skipping a team-requested event, and more ridiculously, that someone in his inner circle was taking too much food from the family room.
In other words, the Warriors and Kuminga had soured on each other to the extent that even the slightest grievances became a problem. Kuminga felt Kerr had not given him a fair chance to show what he could do, while Kerr felt Kuminga did not have a team-first mentality and failed to fit into the team’s system.
It served as a sign of how far gone things were between the two sides when Kuminga requested a trade the moment he became eligible to be moved. He eventually got his wish in a relationship that was clearly unsalvageable.
