New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo emerged as a playmaker and as a needed offensive spark for a team that went from 0-3 to 2-4 this past season. However, his rookie campaign ended prematurely due to a gruesome dislocation of his right ankle that he suffered during the Giants' Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 26.
During a recent chat with Ryan Morik of Fox News Digital, Skattebo revealed that he has spoken with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner about recovering from such a setback. Referred to as "the heart and soul" of the 49ers' defense, Warner went down with a dislocated and broken ankle in Week 6 of this season.
"I talked to him a couple times about just what he's doing and how he's going about things," Skattebo said about his conversations with Warner. "You know, he obviously got back pretty quick, and my situation was different. We were done with the season and didn't have any playoff hopes. So the way he pushed himself, I wanted to do the same thing, you know, even though I didn't have a season to look forward to, I still wanted to be in that same situation. So he's been a big, big asset to me."
Skattebo was referencing how Warner pushed his recovery timeline ahead of schedule to the point that he possibly could have returned to the lineup had the 49ers advanced to the NFC Championship Game. Instead, San Francisco fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs.
As for the Giants, they had no reason to rush Skattebo back. Big Blue fell to 2-13 before the club ended the campaign with back-to-back wins.
"I feel good," Skattebo told Morik. "Getting healthy, a couple months out, so I'm starting to put it in the past and get over the hard part and get back to work."
Skattebo is on track to be ready for the start of the Giants' offseason workout program later this spring. The hope among Giants fans is that the entertaining 24-year-old will be good as new, if not better, come September.
