Could Malik Willis be Dolphins' answer as replacement for Tua Tagovailoa?

The Miami Dolphins have a new regime in town.

Head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan left the Green Bay Packers to set up shop at South Beach, and they might bring a budding star with them to Florida.

Malik Willis is the strongest candidate to go from backup to starter next season, and with the Dolphins' questions at the position, Greg Auman of FOX Sports believes he could be a logical pick for this team.

In his latest column, he predicted Willis would follow Hafley to Miami on a short-term, mid-tier contract.

Dolphins could go after Malik Willis

“Willis, 26, may be the hardest free agent to ballpark in terms of how much money he’ll get,” Auman wrote. “There’s an absolute lack of quality quarterbacks available, combined with a weak QB draft class, so teams without an obvious starter may overpay here. Could he be a match for former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, seeking a reasonably priced answer he can build around in Miami? You’ll see him projected for a Justin Fields-type deal, like two years and $40 million.”

Former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel benched Tua Tagovailoa down the stretch last season, with rookie Quinn Ewers showing signs of promise and looking like a potential solution at the position.

Willis, however, gives the Dolphins a true dual-threat option. He's elite at rolling out of the pocket and making plays with his legs, and the two years learning from Packers head coach Matt LaFleur worked wonders with his accuracy and decision-making.

Of course, hiring a backup as the starter will always come with some risks, but Sullivan and Hafley got to watch him up close and know him for two years in Wisconsin.

And even though moving on from Tagovailoa would come with a massive financial hit, making that type of sacrifice might just be worth it.
