The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting for Aaron Rodgers' decision.
However, they won't take the same approach they took when they tried to sign him last offseason. This time, the Steelers will have a backup plan in case Rodgers decides to walk away or sign with another team.
As the situation wears on, NFL analyst Mina Kimes recently linked the Steelers with Green Bay Packers QB Malik Willis.
“Two of the teams I’ve been hearing a lot are Miami [and] Pittsburgh,” Kimes said, per Sleeper NFL. “I just don’t think it makes sense for [Miami’s] timeline, whereas Pittsburgh … I think the timeline and the player just match up.”
Willis will be one of the most-coveted quarterbacks in free agency. Spotrac projects his next contract to be in the $71M, two-year range.
While not a starter, Willis showed vast improvement in his two years with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
The former Tennessee Titans draft pick is a talented athlete who can roll out of the pocket and get big gains with his legs, and he'd give the Steelers offense a different dynamic and feel than a traditional pocket passer like Aaron Rodgers.
Granted, making a run at him would also come with major financial risks. He's a young veteran with a sky-high upside, but he doesn't have extensive experience as a starter.
Rodgers will most likely drag his decision deep into the offseason again, and the Steelers are doing the right thing by keeping their options open.
