Winning usually quiets whatever noise builds up during a game. But even after a 129-101 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night at Chase Center, the spotlight around the Los Angeles Lakers shifted elsewhere.
Cameras caught a tense moment between head coach JJ Redick and star guard Luka Doncic late in the game. Doncic, who has carried much of the offensive load this season with averages of 32.5 points, 8.6 assists and 7.7 rebounds across 48 games, was walking back toward the bench after being subbed out when the exchange unfolded.
Video circulating on social media showed Redick reaching for Doncic’s arm as the two exchanged words. The discussion did not end there. Once seated, Doncic appeared visibly frustrated before standing and stepping back toward his coach.
Teammate Jarred Vanderbilt quickly intervened, guiding Doncic away and defusing the situation before it escalated further.

The clip made the rounds online within minutes, and reactions followed just as quickly. Some fans questioned Doncic’s response.
“At least you should respect your coach. You can’t be bigger than the team,” one fan wrote.
Another backed Redick’s stance, “I respect the fact that JJ will hold his stars accountable. He was clearly p— at Luka and got in his face to send a message to him about it. Good coaches hold their stars accountable.”
“Dang, this sucks because I love seeing Luka as a Laker. But this ain’t good. Hopefully they mend their relationship, because if not, they may not go far, and I’d imagine JJ would be the one at risk of getting fired,” one fan added, worrying about the bigger picture.
“Just feels like Luka hates life now. Used to be one of the most joyful players we had,” another added.
There was also praise for Vanderbilt’s quiet intervention, “Vander with the no look assist. Pretended like he was clapping for the team. Class that.”
Doncic has never hidden his emotions on the floor. That edge has, at times, led him to push back against former head coaches as well. Still, Lakers fans would rather not see repeated sideline flare-ups between their star and Redick.
With the regular season tightening, chemistry matters if they hope to avoid the play-in tournament. Redick carries his own fire, and Doncic plays with visible intensity.
Over a long schedule, moments like that are almost expected. They have probably had tougher conversations away from cameras, and that alone does not define their working relationship.
