Kevin Durant had made 36 consecutive free throws before his chance to tie the Houston Rockets' game with the Golden State Warriors in overtime. He missed, missed his next attempt, then sank one he tried to miss on purpose in a 115-113 loss.
The Warriors played without Steph Curry and starter Moses Moody, but they played the Rockets tough. And down the stretch, it was Brandin Podziemski and De'Anthony Melton hitting big shots for the Warriors and not the Rockets All-Star.
Durant didn't have a bad game against the Warriors, scoring 23 points and collecting four steals. But he wasn't a factor at the end of regulation, with old teammate Draymond Green aggressively denying the ball to Durant, who took only two shots in the fourth quarter.
He did hit a three-pointer in overtime to cut the Warriors' lead to a single point, after the Rockets corralled a missed free throw and Durant got loose on the broken play. Durant also drew a three-shot foul on Melton on the next possession, setting up his crucial miss.

But his miss opened the door for the Warriors to take another three-point lead when Melton (23 points) scored on a putback after the Warriors grabbed two offensive rebounds on the far taller Rockets.

The lead gave Green the chance to thwart Durant again, fouling KD before he could attempt a game-tying three. He missed again from the line, then tried to miss to give his team a chance at another offensive board — but his bank shot went in.
Durant won two championships with the Warriors and tore his Achilles in the NBA Finals trying for a three-peat. But he also got into an ugly fight on the bench with Green early in the 2018-19 season, with the power forward shouting expletives at Durant in full view of teammates and TV cameras.
Since then, Durant has played for three different teams without tasting the same success. Green won a title in 2022 but has suffered massive hits to his reputation thanks to a series of dirty plays and suspensions. Both players also love to talk trash — Green on his podcast, Durant on social media (and allegedly on burner accounts).
It was a crucial loss for the Rockets, fighting for position in the tight Western Conference standings. Playing at home, facing a short-handed Warriors team, the Rockets should have handled their business.
The loss stings for the whole team, but especially for the All-Star who is still trying to prove himself away from the place he had the greatest success. Durant will likely think about his misses — and his accidental make — for some time.
