No. 1 UConn women one step closer to another undefeated season after latest Big East title

The top-ranked UConn women have been on a tear in conference title games, and Monday night's meeting with Villanova was no different.

After jumping out to a 23-11 lead after the opening quarter, the Huskies (34-0, 20-0 Big East) never looked back in a 90-51 rout over the Wildcats (25-7, 16-4 Big East). The win marks UConn's 13th consecutive conference tournament title, dating back to its days in the American Conference and its sixth Big East title in a row.

Overall, UConn has now won 31 conference tournament titles and 24 as a member of the Big East. It won each of its conference games by at least 14 points during the regular season and its three tournament games by an absurd average of 44.3 points per game.

UConn looks poised to win another national title

The Huskies have been on another level in Big East play lately after setting a program record for the most consecutive conference wins (including the conference tournament) with 70.

When UConn and Villanova played on Feb. 18, the Wildcats gave the Huskies their only halftime deficit of the season before ultimately losing 83-69. There was no doubt this time around, largely due to UConn's two stars and elite defense.

Graduate guard Azzi Fudd led the team in scoring with 19 points (8-of-13 FG, 3-of-7 3PT). She also tacked on three steals, including this one prior to the half that ended with a layup on the other end.

Sophomore forward Sarah Strong — the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player — had 18 points (7-of-11 FG) and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Blanca Quinonez (13 points, 5-of-10 FG) was strong off the bench, while Junior guard KK Arnold had 10 points (4-of-5 FG) and seven assists.

UConn shot 52%, which should come as no surprise for the nation's second-best scoring offense (88.7 PPG). However, what makes this team stand out the most is its Division I-leading defense (50.4 PPG), something that was once again a factor on Monday.

The Huskies are coming off their 11th undefeated regular season in program history, all of which have come under the leadership of head coach Geno Auriemma. Seven of those previous 10 have culminated with a national championship, and all signs are indicative of them tacking on an eighth next month and their 13th national title overall.

A recent debate that has emerged is whether UConn — despite its historic dominance — will be the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, or if Big Ten champion and Associated Press No. 2 UCLA (31-1, 18-0 Big Ten) will leapfrog it. After all, the Bruins have 10 more Quad 1 wins than the Huskies, although a lot of that has to do with the lack of competition that UConn faced in the Big East.

With that said, this UConn team looks as dominant and complete as any that Auriemma has coached. With another Big East title to its credit and an unblemished record entering the Big Dance, bet against the Huskies at your own risk.
