The Chicago Bears were heavily linked with Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders for at least several weeks until it was learned that the Baltimore Ravens planned to send Las Vegas two first-round draft picks in return for the pass-rusher.
However, the Ravens ultimately backed out of the agreement because Crosby failed a team physical. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Bears general manager Ryan Poles addressed whether or not he truly explored landing Crosby earlier this offseason.
"We’re always going to monitor every situation," Poles explained, per Nicholas Moreano of BearsRoundtable. "Sometimes it fits and it works with what you’ve got going on in terms of resources. Sometimes it doesn’t. We were involved. We checked into it. We looked to see if it made sense, had some dialogue, but I’ll just leave it at that."
It's believed that dialogue basically went nowhere because only the Ravens were willing to match the Raiders' high asking price for Crosby. Las Vegas is now reportedly telling interested teams that Crosby "won’t be traded" this offseason, and he seems fine with staying put after he previously requested a trade.
Crosby may not be cleared for football-related activities until "June or early July" following the meniscus repair he needed earlier this winter. It's now believed no other team would be willing to pay what Baltimore had offered for the 28-year-old.
"I think I’ve mentioned this over the years, just constantly looking at short term, long term," Poles added about his mindset regarding a blockbuster trade for a player such as Crosby. "What’s going to help this football team now? But also, being conscious of what’s going to happen down the road. We want to sustain success. We talk about that a lot. In order to do that, we have to be very calculated with the moves we make. So when we were looking into different situations, we took that into account. We felt like sticking with our plan going into free agency, that was the best thing for us."
What's done is done, and it seems like both the Raiders and Bears have moved on from discussing a deal that could send Crosby to Chicago.
