The San Francisco 49ers and Trent Williams continue to be at a stalemate. They want to restructure his contract to lower his massive $38.8 million cap hit, but he has refused so far.
As has happened multiple times in recent years, GM John Lynch has failed to find common ground with one of his stars.
However, NFL insider Jason La Canfora reports that the team won't just release him if he can't agree to a revised deal. So, as much as they've shut down on all trade inquiries so far, that could change at the end of the week.
Should that happen, La Canfora adds that the Kansas City Chiefs will likely be his most aggressive suitor.
"The Kansas City Chiefs, we continue to hear, would be at the front of the line to try to secure his services," La Canfora reported. "The 49ers have until the 10th day of the NFL’s league year to pick up a $10M option bonus on Williams’s contract."
The Chiefs will have to make a decision here. On the one hand, it makes sense to hold out for a player of Williams' caliber. On the other hand, he's 37, has a history of injuries, and may not be available at all.
As such, GM Brett Veach will have to tread carefully over the next couple of days. He can't go on major spending sprees, not knowing whether he'll need to have more wiggle room for Williams.
Williams is still one of the best blindside protectors in the game, and it makes sense that he tries to get more guaranteed money in what might be the final deal of his career.
As for the Niners, they have enough cap space to sort something out with their future Hall of Famer, and letting him go may come back to bite them in no time.
