For the second straight year, the Pittsburgh Steelers do not officially know whether or not Aaron Rodgers will serve as their starting quarterback for an upcoming season early into free agency.
Individuals within the Steelers have repeatedly suggested they aren't losing sleep regarding Rodgers' process for deciding what he will do. During a recent appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," Steelers legend and Hall of Famer Rod Woodson voiced his displeasure over the latest Rodgers-related saga.
"Is he gonna play? Listen, I get kinda tired of it," Woodson explained, per Grant Gordon of the NFL's website. "Listen, if he's gonna play, say he's gonna play, he's gonna come back. And the team shouldn't wait for Aaron Rodgers. They need to move forward."
Woodson's comments may remind some of how longtime Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward generated headlines last March when he said his "pitch" to Rodgers at that time was: "Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don't. It's that simple." Heyward later apologized, and there's no indication he won't welcome Rodgers back with open arms if the 42-year-old returns to Pittsburgh's active roster later this spring.
For what it's worth, a report revealed that Rodgers "is aware of the [Steelers'] ongoing roster construction" and that "the two sides continue to engage in positive conversations." It's believed Rodgers could make his intentions known before the end of March.
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan seem to be big fans of young quarterback Will Howard, a 2025 sixth-round draft pick. In the first round of last year's player-selection process, Pittsburgh grabbed defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. Four choices later, the New York Giants acquired a potential future franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart.
"They should've taken Jaxson Dart," Woodson added about the Steelers. "He fell to them. It was the best opportunity for them to take that quarterback who has that swag, kinda fit into that Steeler mold. And now, what are they looking for? That quarterback of the future still."
Howard could ultimately prove to be that player for Pittsburgh, but history suggests the club's long-term answer at the sport's most important position isn't on the roster as of the middle of March 2026.
