Luka Doncic scores 60, breaks franchise record as Lakers extend winning streak

Further claiming his place in the NBA's MVP picture, Luka Doncic put up his most dominating performance of the season as the Los Angeles Lakers stayed red-hot in March.

Doncic scored 60 points during the Lakers' 134-126 road win in Miami against the Heat. He also added seven rebounds, three assists and five steals, doing it all for Los Angeles.

Doncic's 60-point night gave him a new season-high after scoring 51 earlier in the month on March 12. It also became his third 60-plus-point game of his career — also scoring on Dec. 27, 2022 and his career-best of 73 on Jan. 26, 2024.

Luka Doncic set a franchise record in his first full season with the Lakers

Reaching 60 points wasn't even the only reason Doncic's night was historic. He actually made Lakers history in his first full season with the franchise.

With nine three-pointers made — he was 9-of-17 — in the win against the Heat, Doncic set a new franchise single-season record for the most made threes.

Doncic, 27, now has a 37.0% clip from three for the season, which is above his career mark of 35.3% and a tick higher than the 36.8% he registered last season with the Dallas Mavericks and then the Lakers after the February trade.

Luka Doncic is firmly in the MVP race

A six-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA first-team selection, Doncic's impressive season, especially his strong play as of late, has propelled the Lakers to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference thanks to winning eight in a row.

All in all, Doncic has a case as adding an MVP to his already Hall of Fame-worthy resume. In 58 games, Doncic owns averages of 33.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 8.4 assists while shooting 47.7% from the field.
