ESPN's Mel Kiper predicts Cowboys to take All-American LB in 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 NFL Draft is just over a month away. Teams are completing their free agent signings before fully focusing on draft preparation.

The Dallas Cowboys will likely be targeting several defensive players in the upcoming draft. While the Cowboys boasted one of the best offenses in the league, thanks in large part to head coach Brian Schottenheimer's effective play-calling, the team's defense faced significant challenges. They ranked 30th in total yards allowed (377.0), 23rd in rushing yards allowed (125.5), and were last in both passing yards allowed (251.5) and points allowed (30.1).

That's why ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. predicts that the Cowboys will select two defensive players with their two first-round picks, the second being Georgia Bulldogs All-American linebacker CJ Allen.

"It'd be wise for the Cowboys to double-dip on defense (Jermod McCoy at No. 12)," Kiper wrote. "They gave up 6.1 yards per play in 2025, 31st in the NFL and third worst for any team in any of the past five seasons. Allen can play all three downs, as he can drop in coverage, run down ball carriers and even blitz. He had 97 tackles last season for the Bulldogs, showcasing tremendous read-and-react skills."

This draft sets up as a defining moment for Dallas, not just in terms of roster construction, but in identity. For a team that has leaned heavily on offensive firepower, the need to rebalance is clear—and how aggressively they attack that need will say a lot about their long-term vision.

Going defense early would signal a philosophical shift toward building a more complete team, one capable of winning in multiple ways rather than relying on shootouts. It also places added importance on player development, as immediate contributors will be needed to stabilize a unit that struggled with consistency and execution.

If Dallas gets this right, it could reshape the trajectory of the roster heading into the next few seasons. If not, the same issues that held them back could continue to define their ceiling, regardless of how explosive the offense remains.
