Patriots' Morgan Moses shares how Drake Maye embraced challenge to improve as a leader

The overall improvement of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye as a second-year pro became one of the most-discussed topics of the 2025 NFL season as he guided his team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Meanwhile, 35-year-old Patriots offensive tackle Morgan Moses has shared locker rooms with numerous leaders throughout his career, which began in 2014. On the latest edition of the "Forged in Foxborough" podcast, Moses discussed what Maye brought to the Patriots throughout the club's successful campaign.

Drake Maye helped change Patriots' "identity" for the better

"He just has a personal relationship with every single person on this roster," Moses said about Maye, per Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "What he brings to this team as a friend, as a brother in the locker room, the camaraderie he builds with the guys. ...he’s part of the identity we talk about."

After the Patriots hired head coach Mike Vrabel last offseason, he and Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf made it known they wanted Maye to grow as a leader coming off his rookie campaign. Alleged concerns about Maye's willingness to fully accept "that part of the job" arose during the summer, but he soon quieted such chatter once the games began to matter in September.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Maye played well enough to finish second to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2025 MVP Award voting. According to Pro Football Reference, Maye ended his second pro regular season leading the NFL among qualified players with a 77.1 adjusted QBR, a 113.5 passer rating and a 72 percent completion percentage. He was fourth with 4,394 passing yards and third with 31 touchdowns through the air.

Patriots players view Drake Maye as an "electrifying" force

It sounds like Maye's impressive stats only tell part of the story regarding all that he meant to the 2025 Patriots.

"When you got a guy back there at quarterback like that, when you step on the field, it’s electrifying," Moses added about Maye.

If Maye improves upon all that he accomplished from September 2025 through this past January, he could help spark the beginning of New England's next dynastic run.
