No. 1 Duke gets wakeup call against No. 16 Siena

For most of their opening game against the Siena Saints, the Duke Blue Devils looked nothing like the NCAA Tournament's No. 1 overall seed. Then tough defense and the Boozer twins helped Duke escape with a 71-65 win.

Cameron Boozer had 22 points and 13 rebounds while twin brother Cayden Boozer added 19 points, five assists and two steals as Duke avoided being the second No. 1 team to lose to a No. 16. The close game was alarming but might serve as a wakeup call to the slow-starting Blue Devils.

Siena Saints ran out of gas in the second half

Duke went into its opening game of March Madness down two starters. Guard Caleb Foster may be out for the season with a broken foot, while center Patrick Ngongba missed the Siena game with foot soreness. Duke used only seven players as a result.

That was a huge roster of players compared to Siena, who didn't use a substitute until the final minute of the game. Five Siena starters officially played 40 minutes, which may be why their shots stopped falling late. Duke held Siena scoreless for 6:47, during which the Saints missed eight straight shots. The fatigue may have contributed to Duke grabbing five offensive rebounds in that stretch and going on an 11-0 run.

Siena also couldn't handle the Boozer brothers, who were especially unstoppable when they passed to each other.

Duke is in danger of upsets if it doesn't get healthy

Cameron Boozer could be a top-three pick in the NBA draft, but he's carrying a heavy load for the Blue Devils. The team sorely missed Ngongba's defensive presence and shot-blocking, while the offense struggled to get in sync.

Duke had only 11 assists and shot only 5-of-26 on three-pointers. They needed Cameron Boozer's 13-of-14 performance from the foul line to escape a Siena team that was No. 181 in Ken Pomeroy's statistical rankings.

The Blue Devils survived and advanced. They could use some reinforcements to advance further.
