The Philadelphia 76ers traded Jared McCain for a late first-round pick and luxury tax relief. Monday, he showed his old team what they were missing in a 123-103 Oklahoma City Thunder win.
McCain scored 13 points and shot 3-of-7 from deep, finishing with a game-high +19 plus/minus rating for the game. The Thunder won their 12th straight game and moved to 17-2 since trading for the second-year guard.
The Thunder endured a number of injuries to starters in the past month. Jalen Williams played his first game since Feb. 11 on Monday, scoring 18 points in 20 minutes with six assists and four rebounds. Starting center Isaiah Hartenstein has battled injuries all season, but put up 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in just 22 minutes Monday.
But McCain still logged 25 minutes despite the Thunder's backcourt strength returning. With OKC taking a 22-point lead at halftime, they gave Williams and Lu Dort plenty of rest and let guards Cason Wallace and Isaiah Joe play big minutes, along with McCain.
When McCain hit back-to-back threes in the first quarter, injured All-Star Tyrese Maxey didn't look happy to see his old teammate excelling against his squad.

By contrast, the injured 76ers, missing Maxey, suspended Paul George, an ill Quentin Grimes and injured Kelly Oubre, had to start journeyman 25-year-old MarJon Beauchamp in the backcourt, where he shot 5-for-18.
The loss dropped the Sixers to 7th place in the Eastern Conference, where only 2.5 games separate the fifth-place Toronto Raptors and the 10th-place Charlotte Hornets. That means the Sixers could avoid the play-in with a strong final 10 games, but it also means they're in danger of having to win two play-in games.
That's why the 76ers' budget-minded move might cost them. Yes, trading McCain helped Philadelphia get under the luxury tax, but having McCain instead of someone like Beauchamp or 31-year-old Cameron Payne could have meant an extra win or two, which could well give Philadelphia a minimum of two home playoff games if they finished fifth or sixth.
Maybe Philadelphia wasn't worried about injuries, though their roster is full of players who've had health concerns the last two years. The game against the Thunder was likely a lost cause, but the Sixers have two huge upcoming games against the Miami Heat and the Hornets in the next week. It would have been nice if they had a sharpshooter guard like McCain.
