It's hardly a secret that people throughout the NFL felt earlier this winter that it could become a matter of when and not if New York Jets owner Woody Johnson eventually fires often-criticized head coach Aaron Glenn. Such takes were shared both before and after the Jets hired Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator.
NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US spoke with an unnamed head coach and a top personnel executive about Glenn's future. Neither individual painted a rosy picture regarding Glenn's second season in his current role.
"Reich will be coaching that team by December," the coach predicted about the Jets.
While the Jets went 3-14 in their first season with Glenn in charge, Johnson basically blamed quarterback Justin Fields for the team's 0-7 start in October. Fields is no longer with the Jets, but New York sports radio legend Mike Francesa recently raised eyebrows when he suggested that general manager Darren Mougey has received more power this offseason as it pertains to personnel decisions.
Whether or not that's accurate is unknown, but it certainly appears to outsiders that Glenn's seat is quite warm heading into the upcoming draft.
Reich previously served as head coach of both the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers. According to at least one report, he was heavily involved in the Jets' decision to bring journeyman Geno Smith back to be the club's starting quarterback for the 2026 campaign.
"Woody was already pi---- at Glenn a year ago, and he’s going to love Reich," the personnel exec told La Canfora. "I know how Woody thinks. Reich is the perfect in-house guy to have as the interim head coach, if you need him."
Some who have examined the Jets' roster believe the team is already thinking ahead to the 2027 draft. If the Jets are so bad during the upcoming season that they're accused of "tanking," Reich could receive an audition to win the team's full-time head-coaching job before Week 18 wraps up.
