The Toronto Blue Jays evidently didn't want to pay Bo Bichette the $126 million deal he landed or submit to his opt-out demands. That left them to find a new infielder.
This Blue Jays team has transformed, hoping to return to the World Series this season, with Kevin Gausman getting his first Opening Day start for the Blue Jays. He proved himself this season, serving as a reliable top-of-the-rotation anchor.
He finished the regular season with an improved ERA of 359, 1.06 WHIP and 189 punchouts across 193 innings.
Twenty of the 26 guys on the roster are returning this season, including Eric Lauer, who had an impressive season in 2025. Thanks to injuries, he gets his opportunity to pitch in the rotation to start the season, and he also comes to the rescue. Nathan Lukes also got his first Opening Day start. Alejandro Kirk also had a strong season as he was an All-Star.

Fans clearly connect with his competitive fire, contributions to the 2025 postseason run, and decision to return.
While Bichette's offensive impact is a loss, the focus on building a more complete defensive team is designed to make the team successful, especially given that many players showed promise during the 2025 season.
This includes Lukes, Barger, Myles Straw, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kevin Gausman, Lauer and Daulton Varsho, who is expected to have a breakout season. He had a stellar spring, hitting .380 with five home runs.

The lineup is also solid with infielders such as Ernie Clement. He is expected to have a strong season following career-highs last season, and recorded 30 hits, which was the most ever recorded in a postseason.
He earned this pivotal achievement across 18 games, breaking Randy Arozarena's previous record of 29.
Clement also displayed a strong performance in the postseason through his 13-game hitting streak during the Blue Jays' historic 2025 run.
Clement is coming into this season with his head held high, showing passion and pride for being on the Blue Jays in an article for the Players' Tribune. While it was a heartbreaking game seven loss, it was a season to be remembered as it captivated fans' hearts.
"I know my career won't last forever. But I know the little kid in me would be proud of how I'm smiling and having fun out there, the same way I did all those years ago in the backyard. Baseball is my favourite thing in the world, man, and I'm so honoured I get to play it with the Jays and in Toronto."
Clement will also be the primary man at second base, who also showcased clutch skills defensively last season. Towards the midpoint of the season, he played 20 consecutive errorless games, establishing himself as a solid defender.
Overall, it strengthens the middle infield, while adding Japanese hitter Kazuma Okamoto provides power to mitigate the loss of offensive production, while also having strong skills at third base. Gimenez also strengthens the middle infield defense, as Bichette wasn’t a strong defensive asset at shortstop.
The Blue Jays have several different weapons offensively, Guerrero Jr., George Springer and up-and-coming threats at the plate, Addison Barger and Clement.
The 2026 team aims to win through pitching and defense, having secured a cornerstone in Guerrero.
Following the departure of Bo Bichette, new additions like Okamoto and the savvy addition Jesús Sánchez are also projected to be key contributors to the lineup. As well as a Ponce debut, which should be exciting.
By avoiding the three-year, $126M contract with the New York Mets for a player who is injury-prone and has showcased a defensive decline. Toronto has flexibility and has moved toward a more balanced roster.
