The New England Patriots are clearly ahead of schedule, but they still have multiple issues to address.
They dominated their opposition last season, but their glaring issues were significantly exposed in their playoff run against top-ranked defenses.
Quarterback Drake Maye was sacked 21 times in the postseason, the most in NFL history.
That's why, according to NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US, they will strengthen the trenches by adding another pass-protector in the NFL Draft.
“They’re going to be aggressive,” one general manager told La Canfora. “They’ll move up if they have to.”
Most mock drafts had the Patriots taking another wide receiver for Maye, with KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston as the most likely targets. That may not be the case anymore.
There should be plenty of options to move up if you're the Patriots. While the likes of Francis Mauigoa, Spencer Fano and Monroe Freeling may not be on the table, they can maybe get Caleb Lomu, Kadyn Proctor or Blake Miller.
However, they may not stop there. Given how much Will Campbell struggled as a rookie and the concerns about his short arms for a tackle, another decision-maker claimed, per La Canfora, that the Patriots will finally move him to guard.
“Campbell would be better at guard,” another general manager said. “That’s where he’ll end up.”
Making such a move just one year after taking him with the No. 4 pick will certainly raise some eyebrows, but that was part of the risk they took when they drafted him.
He allowed five sacks, 26 total pressures, and was called for seven penalties as a rookie, according to Pro Football Focus.
