Prospect Cooper Pratt had not played above Double-A entering the 2025 season. That isn't stopping the Milwaukee Brewers from locking in their young shortstop.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Brewers and Pratt are close to finalizing an eight-year extension with a pair of team options. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Pratt will receive $50.75M in guarantees.
Ranked as the Brewers fourth-best prospect per MLB.com, Pratt is considered a solid all-around prospect with excellent contact ability and a plus arm. He was a minor league Gold Glove winner in 2024 and has the potential to stick at short, even with top prospects Jesus Made and Luis Pena coming through the system.
Pratt had a solid showing as a 20-year-old in Double-A in 2025. He posted a .238/.343/348 batting line in his 524 plate appearances, hitting eight homers and 22 doubles while stealing 31 bases. Pratt's on-base and contact skills were evident during his stint in Biloxi as he drew 67 walks while striking out only 80 times.
His skillset will ensure that he remains in the lineup even if his defensive home is in question. If the Brewers prefer to have Made or Pena as their shortstop of the future, Pratt could shift to either second or third. He has the arm strength to handle the hot corner and could be a perennial Gold Glove winner at second.
Cooper Pratt has emerged as one of the top prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers system. He will now be a key part of the present and future with his long-term extension.
