Aaron Glenn makes wild prediction about what Geno Smith will achieve with Jets

Shortly after journeyman quarterback Geno Smith returned to the New York Jets earlier this offseason, he made it known that he wants to guide the franchise to its second Super Bowl championship.

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, second-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn echoed Smith regarding Glenn's expectations for what the veteran signal-caller could accomplish.

Aaron Glenn thinks Geno Smith can lead Jets where they want to go

"I just feel like he's the guy that's gonna lead us to the promised land," Glenn said about Smith. "He's the guy that's gonna touch the ball more than anybody else on offense. I know he had his struggles, and I think a lot of quarterbacks, you know, they have their struggles."

Specifically, the StatMuse website shows that Smith committed the second-most turnovers in the NFL (18) as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders this past season. While the Raiders were seemingly more than happy to move on from Smith as they prepare to likely make Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza the first pick of this year's draft, Glenn has already named Smith the Jets' 2026 Week 1 starter.

Why Aaron Glenn is so high on Geno Smith this spring

Glenn suggested that one reason he is so high on Smith is that the 35-year-old will have "a chip on his shoulder" after being discarded by the Raiders following the 2025 campaign. Glenn also noted that Smith "has "proven a lot in this league."

Perhaps most notably, Smith earned Comeback Player of the Year Award honors and his first career Pro Bowl nod for the 2022 season while with the Seattle Seahawks. Of course, that was some time ago.

"He fits exactly what we're trying to do," Glenn added about Smith. "...The foundation of our offense is pretty good now."

Those who think the Jets are "tanking" with the 2027 NFL Draft in mind and that Glenn could be out of a job before Christmas clearly disagree with his assessments. Then again, it's possible that the Jets could spend a high-value pick on a quarterback during the 2026 NFL Draft and that the to-be rookie could be Gang Green's QB1 by the time January 2027 comes around.
