Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie made interesting Jalen Hurts comments before latest report about alleged drama

On Wednesday, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts became the subject of yet another story about how he was allegedly somewhat to blame for the struggles the Eagles endured during the 2025 season.

One day before the latest Hurts-related piece went public, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie made some interesting comments about his QB1.

Jalen Hurts has "no bigger fan" than Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie

"There’s no bigger fan of Jalen than me," Lurie said, per Brooks Kubena of The Athletic. "The guy, MVP of the Super Bowl 13 months ago. Should have been MVP of the Super Bowl (in the 2022 season). Exceptional and so dedicated. I mean, I think you probably know, I spend a lot of time with Jalen, as I do with most quarterbacks. Incredibly dedicated to the game, to winning and being a huge winner. I love everything about him."

Others within the Eagles clearly don't share Lurie's opinion of Hurts. In January, a bombshell report claimed that Hurts had "been the source of much internal frustration" among teammates and others throughout the 2025 season.

For a lengthy article posted on Wednesday, Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN detailed how Hurts' personality traits that "rubbed people the wrong way before had grown since the championship win." Additionally, McManus and Fowler noted that the Eagles' passing attack falling "into deep ruts over the past several seasons" has "been an ongoing source of angst for some internally."

Are Eagles close to signing Jalen Hurts to an extension amid latest drama?

Hurts signed a five-year contract extension reportedly worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed in the spring of 2023. While many believe it's likely that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman will trade wide receiver A.J. Brown at some point after June 1 of this year, there's no indication that Lurie wants to give up on Hurts anytime soon.

That said, it's unclear if Lurie wants to sign Hurts to an extension before the 2026 season gets underway.

"We would never discuss it," Lurie said about possible extension talks with Hurts' camp. "He’s in the middle of a new contract now."

The ESPN piece will inevitably cause some to wonder if the Eagles could trade Hurts. Lurie could quiet such chatter by locking Hurts down to an extension before the 27-year-old takes another meaningful snap.
