With a 6-4 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox have fallen to 1-5, their worst start to a season in the past seven years.
Alex Cora's hitters struck out 38 times, and the Astros outscored the Red Sox 23-7 in a three-game sweep. Overall, the Red Sox have been outscored 32-17.
That's why Red Sox star Trevor Story put the team on blast after another disappointing effort.
“Just unacceptable, really, on both sides of the ball,” Story said, per Christopher Smith of Mass Live. “Defense, too. So overall, not good. And looking to reset here on the off day and get back at home at Fenway, where we dominate and play in front of our home crowd. So I’m excited about that. ...
"Maybe this is good this is happening now and a little gut check and we figure it out — we make the adjustments. But we know we have a great team. We know we can be good. So it’s just about us, the players, to make the adjustments that we need to make. And we have time on our side, but there’s urgency, for sure. This was unacceptable."
Through six games, the Red Sox's rotation has a 1-4 record and a 5.22 ERA, while the bullpen owns a 4.50 ERA in 22 innings. They've made six fielding errors, and they're hitting .208 with a .295 OBP as a team.
Notably, Story knows he's not above the team's issues and also vowed to be better after hitting .138 with 13 strikeouts in the first six games of the season:
“Personally, I’ve got to be a little more disciplined, finding and hunting the one I want,” he admitted. “And not missing it when I get it.”
Cora's team will be off on Thursday before finally making their home debut on Friday vs. the 2-4 San Diego Padres. Maybe they just need some home cooking to get back on track.
