What Kevin O’Connell told J.J. McCarthy about Vikings signing Kyler Murray

Fair or not, the perception exists that the Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray to a team-friendly one-year contract because head coach Kevin O’Connell views Murray as an upgrade over and an eventual replacement for 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy

During a recent appearance on the "Pro Football Talk Live" program, O’Connell revealed what he told McCarthy about the Vikings adding Murray to their quarterback room.

Vikings want "consistency" from Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy

"I was honest with him," O’Connell explained, per Eva Geitheim of Sports Illustrated. "I said, 'We are going to elevate the room as a whole.' We have enough data now to show, 2022, Kirk Cousins plays the majority of that season, we win 13 games, get an opportunity in the postseason. In 2024, with Sam Darnold, he plays every snap but two, and we win 14 games. When we have a standard and consistency at that position, we’ve won a lot of football games."

Injury setbacks limited McCarthy to just 10 regular-season starts over his first two pro campaigns. That said, Murray has a worrisome injury history and made just five starts before he was shut down due to a foot issue during what became his final season as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Will motivated Kyler Murray win the Vikings' QB1 job?

While the Vikings seem serious about giving McCarthy an opportunity to hold onto the starting job this summer, team reporters such as ESPN's Kevin Seifert have routinely touched upon Murray's "presumptive role as the starter." If nothing else, O'Connell sounds confident that Murray will want to silence those who have questioned his work ethic and his dedication to the cause.

"There’s data to tell us we need to build our team a certain way in regards to our quarterback room, whether it was bringing in a talented player like Kyler Murray at a really unique time in his career," O’Connell continued. "I think he’s motivated, I think he’s experienced, I think he knows where he wants to go with his career. We wanted to bring in a player and give him an opportunity to not only compete, but see where he could take this thing."

It could be interesting to see what McCarthy has to say publicly about the Murray signing. Some have openly wondered if McCarthy could ask to be traded elsewhere at some point before preseason games wrap up in August.
