Morgan Rielly sends strong message to Maple Leafs after early playoff elimination

Perhaps a scenario that not many had on their bingo card before the start of the 2025-26 NHL season was the Toronto Maple Leafs being eliminated from playoff contention this early.

Veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly broke his silence on the matter and sent a strong message to both the fan base and his teammates.

Rielly, 32, said that pride and a strong work ethic are required to compete at an institution like the Maple Leafs.

"I think whenever you're in this league, and you're playing for this organization, any team, but I think especially here, you have to take a lot of pride in your work ethic and your commitment to playing and continuing to compete," he said Saturday.

Rielly made it clear that these final games of the season will not be a walk in the park and, despite already being out of playoff contention, he expects the entire team to commit and compete.

"It's a privilege to be in this league, so I expect all of us to compete down the stretch and show some pride and not take anything for granted."

When asked whether he listened to the recent news conference held by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President Keith Pelley, the defenseman explained that the most important thing for him is to stay focused on his job, which is on the ice.

"As players, you've got to try to stay focused on what's happening here, and you've got to put your best foot forward and all those things I talked about off the top, just staying committed and staying focused on your work ethic and doing your job," Rielly said. "So if you think it helps to listen, then that's fine, but for me, I think just trying to stay with the guys and stay in that kind of mindset."

Toronto's alternate captain said he agrees with Pelley's view that an extensive roster rebuild is not needed to be competitive again next season, but acknowledged that he thinks that way because he is a player whose focus is on committing to playing at the highest level.

Rielly is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $60 million deal carrying an average annual value of $7.5 million. He has recorded 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 72 games.
