Multiple journalists point out key problem with Geno Auriemma's apology

Many were quick to point out, however, that Auriemma’s statement never mentions Staley by name, which did not sit well with many.

Auriemma said he felt snubbed by Staley not meeting him for a pregame handshake. He settled for a broad apology to the Gamecocks’ staff instead of addressing his South Carolina counterpart directly.

The most probable outcome is that Auriemma was frustrated with the Huskies’ first loss of the season and lost his cool. The veteran UConn coach was upset about how the game was called by the officials. He complained about his players getting beat up by the physical South Carolina players, and he felt Staley was working the officials in her favor.

UConn had been unbeaten prior to the loss, and it won last year’s NCAA championship. South Carolina won the year before and will face UCLA on Sunday with the chance to win their second title in three years.
